Client Background


South Deep Gold Mine operates one gold plant and is accessed from surface through two shaft systems, the Twin shaft complex of which the main shaft comprises a single-drop to a depth of 2,995 metres, and the original mine's South shaft complex. This makes it one of the deepest mines in South Africa and also gives it the accolade of having the deepest single drop lift system in globally. 2,273 permanent employees and 2,382 contractors are employed.

Contract background and key challenges

Implementation and establishment of an on-site Asset Care Centre commenced during the middle of 2009. Some of the challenges faced with the implementation included:

  • Implement tactical maintenance for more than 2500 assets
  • Plan, issue and control work orders for approximately 400 artisans
  • Maintain the operational asset register of the mine, tracking all equipment movement
  • Improved system managing safety compliance

The PRAGMA intervention

PRAGMA implemented the ACC service by setting up two on-site offices, managing the asset register and associated maintenance plans as well as running the day to day work planning & control.
