Magalies Water to manage their assets the Pragma way

Magalies Water is a state-owned water board providing a wide range of related water and sanitation services in Gauteng, Limpopo, North West and Mpumalanga. Operationally Magalies Water is split into two regions, East and West, and both regions have been On Key users. Recently the East Region engaged Pragma to help them establish and operate an Asset Care Centre (ACC). The East Region currently owns and operates the Wallmansthal, Klipdrift and Cullinan Water Purification plants. In addition, the board also operates the Temba Water Purification Plant on behalf of the City of Tshwane.

Magalies East faces a number of operational challenges. Water demand has grown to such an extent that the plants are operating beyond their design capacity. This has put pressure on the available time for scheduled maintenance. To avoid breakdown ‘firefighting’, Magalies Water has asked Pragma to assist them in putting in place a comprehensive maintenance programme. In addition, the controls needed for the Engineering Materials function are also not adequate, with manual cost allocations to the various plants. Pragma will also be implementing full spares processes to enable proper material and financial control.

Implementation commenced in October 2010 and the Asset Management strategy and policy have been finalised. The relevant standards and business processes have been documented and the Asset Registers set up in On Key. A 5S exercise is currently in progress at the central stores at Klipdrift prior to take-on of stores master data. The predicted go-live date for breakdown maintenance is January 2011. The ACC will be operated by Magalies Water, based on The Pragma Way business processes.
